Fully.
Simply stunning truth. Jesus is 100% fully God AND 100% fully man. Head scratch. Distant look. I can't fully fathom this. That's ok. Me not fully being able to grasp this doesn't diminish its extravagance. I stumbled into this again this week. On my way into the passage that I taught on Sunday, there is seemingly a minor detail, you know a "this isn't really important to the actual meat of this story, but we get it anyway and quickly move over it." But let's stop and marvel at what this tells us. Here is the "pass over" detail...."Jesus was hungry". Stay with me.
Fully God.
Of the myriad of things that we could look at together, let's see just a couple.
Bible book of John, chapter 1, verse 1. "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." The Word is Jesus. Jesus, whom we just celebrated being born, somehow was with God at the creation of the universe. even though in our time and space He had not been born yet. That same Jesus is also God. Fully God.
Bible book of Romans, chapter 8, verse 34. "Christ Jesus, who died- more than that, who was raised to life- is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us." Jesus, who is fully God, laid down His life for you and me, defeated death and raised victoriously in the power that only God could demonstrate. That same death defeating, victoriously raising, fully God Jesus is p-r-a-y-i-n-g f-o-r y-o-u. Only God could do that.
Jesus is fully God and at the same time the bible book of Philippians tells us that "Jesus (who is fully God) did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant." So He willingly embraced being 100% fully man.
Fully man.
Bible book of Luke, chapter 19, verse 41. "As Jesus approached Jerusalem, He wept over it." Jesus cried.
Bible book of John, chapter 13, verse 21. "After He had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit." Jesus was troubled.
Bible book of John, chapter, 4, verse 6. "Jesus, tired as He was from the journey, sat down by the well." Jesus was tired.
And now back to our starting point.....
Bible book of Mark, chapter 11, verse 12. "The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry." Jesus was hungry.
We mustn't skip over this. This truth radically impacts our daily living....
Jesus is God, conquered death and rose in glory and is praying for us....as only God could and can do.
Jesus is man, cried, was troubled, was tired and hungry.....as we are well acquainted with.
What's the big deal?
Jesus, who is God and man, gets you, gets us. He is not looking at you with a disdainful smirk on His face and dismissing you because He is tired of your humanness. Nope. He gets being tired too. He, the Word tells us that. And where does that leave us? This is my hunch and my hope. It leaves us to REST. We can't fully grasp any of this so we literally rest and marvel in faith that the mystery of this God Man fullness of Jesus is at work in us this very second. Let's swim in it.
Fully God. Fully man. Fully loved.
There's more.
